Description:

Hillsdale County Emergency Management and Central Dispatch will be testing community tornado sirens, weather permitting, on Monday morning, March 4th  between 10:00 and 10:30 am

During the test, the steady 30-second TORNADO WATCH signal will be tested first followed 4 minutes later (+/-) by the up and down signal for the TORNADO WARNING which, for the test, will be about 1 minute   (Monitors: Please mention whether or not you heard both of these distinct signals in your report.)

Sirens are tested once each month on the first Monday of the month from March through October.  The March and September tests are scheduled at 10 am to allow schools that are located near a siren to participate in a tornado drill during the tests if they wish to do so.   The April, May, June, July, August and October tests are conducted between 6:00 and 6:30 pm.  The September test is always conducted on the second Monday due to Labor Day.  Every few years, the July test is also delayed until the second Monday.

The tornado sirens are activated remotely by radio using the same channel that is used to alert fire departments and some medical agencies to their calls.  If there is an emergency call in progress we will wait until using the frequency does not interfere with the responsibilities of our public safety partners.  If we cannot test by 10:30 am, due to emergency traffic on the channel or weather in the area, we will delay one week and try again at the same time on March 11th.  The next scheduled test will be held on Monday, April 1st.
